TREND REPORT: Read my ORANGE lips

Orange lips are all the rage. They’ve been spotted everywhere from designer catwalks to celebrity red carpets, to style icons from the likes of Agyness Deyn and Chloe Sevengy (need I say more?) Prada sent their models down the runway in Fanta-fabulous orange lips, while Max Mara opted for a more toned down kiss-of-coral to compliment their Spring 2010 collection. While Spring is more than a few freezing nights away in SA, local girls can still rock this trend in style and here’s how…

Sylvie Hurford, Make-Up Artist L’Oreal Paris South Africa offers these full-proof tips to wearing orange lips:

Firstly, the main thing is to be influenced by the orange, not a slave to it. As with all strong lip colours, it is essential to find the one that suits you.

Women with very pale skin look great in matte, almost coral oranges (think of it as an alternative to classic red). If even this is too scary for you, go for a bricky orange red tone or or a slightly deeper orange shade. As with wearing a red or cerise lip, keep the rest of the makeup to a minimum.

Avoid blusher and keep the skin sheer and matte as opposed to glossy or sheeny (a light pearly highlight on the top of the cheekbone is lovely though). A strong brow, medium contour in the eye socket and piles of carbon black mascara on the top lashes are the perfect complement to a fruity lip.

Women with olive or mid toned complexions tend to look great with sheer and glossy Tangerine lips, while its not the ideal ‘look’ for winter – who cares! Wear what suits you. A pop of similarly toned citrus blusher is a good way to extend the look and to bring colour to the skin. Because the ideal is a more sheer and subtle application of the orange, go mad with a smokey eye (no colour though) and stick to bronzes, gunmetals and carbon blacks for shading, detail and contouring.

Women with deep, dark skin tones have hit the jackpot with this trend. I have never been a great fan of true reds on dark skins, but a pure orange looks amazing! With or without gloss. You can go the whole 9 yards and add a light guava or berry tone to the apples of the cheeks and strengthen the eyes with a controlled liquid liner or black kohl pencil. Slightly highlighted brow and lash extending black mascara complete this look.
