Brazilian Blowout – Review, Before & After

The new word on everyones’ lips right now and considered a hot new hair trend is the Brazilian Blowout. Now, before you freak out, this doesn’t involve any sort of pulling or painful hair experience. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

If you’ve got frizzy, fuzzy, curly, or like me, straight hair that looks sad and in need of a little TLC, then keep reading.

The Brazilian Blowout is “the only professional smoothing treatment that actually improves the health of the hair”. It’s an in-salon treatment, that generally takes about 90 minutes, mine took just over 2 full hours, but then again, my hair is super looooong!

The treatment pretty much gives your hair a boost of hydration, smoothing it out and giving it extreme shine. When hair is damaged, it looks frizzy and dull, think of the Brazilian Blowout as pollyfilla for the hair, filling the cracks with a protective protein layer that seals the hair cuticle, giving it superior shine and increased health.

Before I get into it, it’s important to mention that you do get a few of these “types of treatments”, so don’t be fooled by other products. They are not the same. The Brazilian Blowout pamphlet says the treatment contains no harsh chemicals and get this, it’s “free of Formaldehyde”. If you don’t know what that is, dont’ worry neither did I, but its the stuff that they use to preserve dead bodies – eeek! Yep, some treatments use this stuff and I can’t think of anything worse, can you?

I had my hair done last week at Zephyr Hair Design (in Gillits). While I was getting my hair done, I paged through the info pack for the Brazilian Blowout. Check out some of those before and afters…

I think my hair probably resembled this pic this most. I really hoped that it would turn out like this... Did it? Well, lets find out ๐Ÿ™‚

So, here’s how it went down

First hair is washed with a special Brazilian Blowout Anti-Residue Shampoo. The damp hair is then sectioned into small amounts and the product is applied and combed through. I must say, the smell of this product is heavenly, not often something you get with a treatment product.

The formula looks like this, kinda looks like hair dye doesn't it?

After the product has been fully applied to the hair, it is blowdried roughly with a hairdryer and when its completely dry, a special hair iron is used to flat iron the hair. Next, the hair is washed (I know, blowdried, ironed and then washed, but it’s all part of the process) and mask is applied. The mask is then rinsed off and hair is dried with a hair dryer before you leave the salon.

The super hot hair iron

So how did mine turn out? Pretty good I think…

The first pic is of my hair after being washed and ironed as I normally do every day. You can tell I had it tied up can’t you. The second pic is after the treatment… hello healthy hair! That’s after its been washed the second time and dried only with a hairdryer – no ironing!

If you’re thinking of having this treatment done, I highly recommend it, however I’m only recommending you get an official Brazilian Blowout Treatment. There are lots of “Brazilian” this and “Brazilian” that type treatments, but this one, like I said is free of the horrible Formaldehyde, which has been linked to cancer and other nasty stuff.

With this specific treatment you literally go in, sit a while (one of the only downsides), and then get on with your life. You don’t have to avoid washing or clipping your hair at all. You can literally go from the salon after getting your treatment, to the shower and then tie your hair up. Nothing will happen to it as this is not a chemical straightening treatment, it’s a hydration boosting treatment that your hair will love.

It is a little pricey, (starting from R1500), but it lasts for up to three months, provided your follow the proper at home maintenance which Ill tell you about, and it looks so damn good. It’s been exactly one week since I had mine done, and get this, yesterday, even with my dirty hair, I got a compliment from one of the girls I work with… “your hair looks stunning, what ever you’ve done has really changed it”.

I’ve also been asked by everyone if I’ve had my hair coloured again. The answer is no, but this treatment has just enhanced the gorgeous red that Louise did for me a while ago.

The results of this treatment last up to 12 weeks, provided you only use Sulphur free products on your hair. For best results, it’s recommended that you only use the Brazilian Blowout products, which are available from the salons that offer this treatment. Look for the sicker above to ensure that your salon is a certified, Brazilian Blowout salon. If it’s not, then I’m afraid you’re on your own.

I’m loving my new, healthy and radiant hair! Even when it’s tied back for gym it looks healthy and shiny. The best part is your styling time is cut, literally in half and you can wash your hair, walk out and it will still look fab! For now, I’ve put my ghd in it’s box and enjoying the effortless way to having good hair.

If you’re in Durban, visit Zephyr hair in Gillits to get this treatment done. As far as I am aware, it’s the only salon in Durban that offers this treatment, so if you’re not in the Upper Highway area, it’s worth making the trip.

Give them a call on 031 767 0848 and ask for Louise Thurlow, she did my hair and I would highly recommend her!
