Fashion Splurges – They Happen to the Best of Us

In this week’s edition of Hot-Spotting I uncover the true power of temptation and thrill in fashion splurges and a little black dress is bought. Check it out…

It was a miserable afternoon. The rain was making an appearance for the fifth day running and Durban apathy was at an all time high with no will power to brave the cold and storms for a night out. I decided to work late on my laptop and would like to try blaming the weather and my lack of plans for what happened next but alas, us women know all too well the power and temptation of a spontaneous fashion splurge.

I started off working on features and soon moved onto browsing online shops and fashion boutiques abroad with no real intention of actually buying anything, but soon found myself browsing online stores that deliver to SA. And there it was. An unusually piece inspired by the Funktional Summer range which included a range of dresses and tops with wire-sleeve designs and unique styles for the local fashionistas.

I admired its chic style and bold lines, but I wasn’t serious about buying it. On a whim, I browsed at the price tag and did a quick calculation in my head on what the converted price would be. Tempted, I tried to reason with myself. I didn’t need it; I’d just bought a new pair of floral heels recently. Besides, I was saving up for a new pair I had just seen while browsing at Gateway…wasn’t I? But it’d look great with the heels. I soon convinced myself it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. Perhaps we were just meant to be together?

In an attempt to change my focus and resist another purchase, I browsed through fashion articles and looked at the upcoming styles and colour trends coming into play this season. And there it was. An image of Rihanna in one of the wire-sleeve dresses I had been browsing and came across on sale. It was exactly the same. Perhaps the Jamaican songstress had a moment of weakness as well and purchased the dress on a whim? It was meant to be surely?

Like any good love story, mine too has a happy ending. Involving a perhaps slightly over-used credit card and a crisp, new shopping bag, ok well an online purchase that wasn’t received instantly but still a shopping bag of sorts. I bought the wire-sleeve cage dress and wore it recently to the Gary Player International cocktail which took place at Zimbali recently. And that dear fashionistas, is the true power of the fashion splurge…
