A Gem in the Hills – Brigit Filmer Spa & Skin

By  |  4 Comments

On Wednesday I was treated to a facial, fit for royalty at the beautiful Brigit Filmer Spa right here in Durban. It’s a hidden gem that I can’t believe I didn’t know about. I mean, it’s literally 5k’s from “my area”, up in the gorgeous hills of the Upper Highway Area in Durban.

Located in Gillits, this tranquil spa is the perfect place to relax and benefit from one of their many luxurious treatments for both men and women. This is my kinda spa! It’s a pamper palace that will most definitely become a regular hang out for me.

On arrival I was greeted with a tall glass of orange juice -much needed in this Durban heat- and a warm towel to freshen up before my wonderful therapist, Jenna took me into one of the facial rooms.

The facial rooms boast a beautiful, tranquil interior that immediately calms the spirit, complete with an oversized “lazy boy” therapist chair in the centre of the room. Soft sounds are filtered through the air, creating the perfect atmosphere for a relaxation!

Jenna did the Guinot Deep Cleanse Facial (R325) on my skin, customising it to my skin’s needs. To zap away some annoying pimples, she used a system called “High Frequency” that oxygenates and reduces inflammation. Seriously, it’s the ultimate pimple zapper! 24 hours later and my pimples were completely gone!

While Jenna did my facial, Ntombi gave me a foot massage. I tell you, I was in girly heaven! The massage is not a standard as part of the facial, but reserved as a special treat to loyal customers. It can also be arranged at an additional fee (R60 – R70), but trust me when I say, it’s totally worth it. After a few minutes, my once stressed out day melted away and I was starting to make mental notes to book my next treatment.
Read the end of this article to see how you too can get the royal treatment…

Part of my facial also included a Galvanic treatment, which involves using small metal rollers on the face to help assist in deeper penetration and hydrate the skin even more. It felt wonderful, as did the hot stones on my face, neck and decolletage, and here I thought I was only getting a boring facial.

Jenna has the most amazing way of doing a facial, her hands worked on my skin, almost to the beat of the music that played, connecting the entire experience.

Throughout my one and half hour facial I slipped in and out of semi consciousness, which is a lovely feeling. Kinda like when you watch TV and doze off, but aren’t really sleeping. Its pure euphoria and now I know what’s needed to get it!

After my facial, feeling fresh, with fabulous skin, Jenna took me on a mini tour of the Spa. The whole time I was seriously kicking at myself for not knowing about such a wonderful place. Thanks to my hair stylist, Louise for introducing me!

I was taken up to the Hydrotherapy area that boasts a magnificent cold water plunge pool and jacuzzi on a deck, surrounded by lounge chairs. This I’m told is great place for girlfriends to meet up for a girly pamper session. On request, the Brigit Filmer Spa can arrange a lunch menu, which you can enjoy with your friends over gossip and spa treatments. How awesome!?

They also have a Steam Room and Sauna, Flotation Therapy Pool (which is like being in the Dead Sea), as well as Rasule, which is a traditional Arabian cleansing ritual, that takes place in a herbal steam room.

The interior of the Spa is breathtaking, with the most amazing mosaic art throughout the spa. It’s very girly without being frilly and very, very glam. The splashes of  beautiful mosaic art, all done by well known ceramic mosaic artist Jane Du Rand are complimented with unusual and glam paintings of  perfume bottles and Audrey Hepburn photographs from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Interior designer, Anne York worked with Spa owner, Brigit Filmer to create this tranquil space.

To give you a little taste of what’s on offer at the Brigit Filmer Spa, other treatments include a wide variety of massages ranging from R180 to R600 for a 2-hour Signature Aromatherapy Massage. They do full body exfoliating (R175), self tanning and exfoliating (R260) and back cleansing (R260). They also have slimming and detox wraps (R380) as well as hand and foot treatments (R35 – R330). Waxing (from R50 – R225), brow and lash tinting (from R35 – 85) as well as a wide range of Guinot Facials (R90 – R655) or Dermalogica Facials (from R90 – R575). They also offer IPL treatments.
