I seem to have a thing for New York Fashion designers (Christopher Bailey aside). Last year it was Zac Posen and Proenza Schouler, but now I’m all about Prabal Gurung.
Prabal Gurung, Resort 2013, Prabal Gurung Fall 2012
This Singapore designer was raised in Nepal and studied fashion in India, so naturally his designs are a fusion of his diverse cultural and spiritual influences.
Gurung debuted his first collection at NYFW a mere three years ago, and has since become a favourite amongst modern style icons like Zoe Saldana, Kate Bosworth, Florence Welch, Lady Gaga, and even the First Lady, Michelle Obama.
There’s been loads of buzz around his Resort 2013 collection, with his graphics being described as “works of art” worthy of a canvas, rather than a silk peplum dress. It sounds fussy, but his use of primary colours and simple lines make for effortless tailoring.
What makes me capital L.O.V.E Gurung is his diversity. His Fall 2012 collection was a mod-glam mish-mash of metallics, feathers, lace and sheer – very pretty, and very sexy. But looking at his resort collection, you would almost think that it’s two different designers; and whether that’s down to that fact that he’s relatively “new” to the fashion circuit and he’s still trying to figure out his signature look, or his multiple cultural influences just diffuse naturally into his work, I think that he is the most exciting designer of our time.
