The New Girl

With summer barely making an appearance here in London, stores are already stocking their shelves with autumn pieces. One of the key trends I’m LOVING is what I like to call the New Girl. It’s an evolution of “tomboy” and “military”, it’s the reason why “boyfriend” is a prefix to “jeans”, “blazer”, and “tee”. One of my fave labels “Band of Outsiders” even calls their woman’s range “Boy”. So here’s my take on the super confident and super sexy New Girl – she’s inspired and empowered by menswear.

So I’m talking feminine menswear, think Burberry, who arguably catalyzed a global love for unisex outerwear with its signature trench coat. For autumn 2012, Hermes, Ralph Lauren and Balmain (more on Balmain next week) are following suit. Tweed, ties, trilbies, top hats, three pieces suits – forget Betty, it’s all about Don Draper.

Personally I buy all my tees and blazers in the mens section, cos they just fit better. Go have a look for yourself or better yet, check out your man’s cupboard! Key pieces for this look are: a boyfriend blazer, a trench coat, a satchel, and loafers. Sexify with tousled hair, smokey eyes or bat-wing eyeliner.

That’s so true, I haven’t been able to find a blazer that fits comfortably and one day I randomly tried on one of my husband’s. Though the sleeves were slightly too long, but with them rolled up, the length of tail and fit on the shoulder was perfect!
