Pop Your Collar

Pop Your Collar

A collar seems a funny thing to categorise an an accessory, but it’s one of the easiest and most versatile ways to switch up any outfit. Personally, I don’t think anyone even noticed collars until Alexa Chung came along with her peter pan collared everything, from tops to jerseys to dresses – peter pan collared items are now generally called “Alexa”.

High street giants like Top Shop and ASOS are loving this trend, ranging pretty much every kind of detachable collar you can think of. The most popular is an embellished pearl and diamante pointed collar, which glams up a simple day look, and can take a day look to night. I’ve also spotted studded leather collars, and faux fur varieties for autumn winter.

Contrast collars are going to be big this winter, as seen on the runways of Derek Lam and Victoria Beckham. A contrast collar looks great when tucked out of a thick knitted jersey, and jewelled collars will sweeten a preppy look. There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to wear collars, so as you would with jewellery, play around, mix and match, you’ll be amazed at how much versatility it can bring to your wardrobe.
