Personalised SkinCare – Meet Kiehl’s Apothecary Preparations

Back in the day, skincare, although limited, was more personalised. 165 years ago, Kiehl’s chemists would mix up concoctions for their clients, to create customised skincare, suited to ones individual needs and skin concerns.

Fast forward to 2016, and the skincare market has exploded with products for every concern. Granted, with today’s advancements in science, research and technology, the quality and availability of products is endless. What it lacks however, is personalisation.

Sure, you can purchase a variety of different skin treats to target every concern, but I’m not talking about loading up your vanity with lotions and potions. I’m talking about a single, customised serum, made just for you – by you!

Meet the new Kiehl’s Apothecary Preparations

I only just found out about this service and range yesterday at a media launch, and am so I excited, I couldn’t wait to share it with you gals!

With the Apothecary PreparationsKiehl’s is going back to it’s heritage. It’s a personalised service, which takes into account your own unique skin concerns, including:

  • Redness
  • Wrinkles
  • Texture
  • Pores and
  • Dullness

Then it allows to create the perfect mix of ingredients, just for you!

Your consultation begins at Kiehl’s with one of their very knowledgeable consultants. The service is already up and running at Kiehl’s Sandton City and Kiehl’s V&A (for now).

During this service, you judge the above skin concerns on a level of 1-4, with 1 being the least of an issue for you and 4 being a major concern.

What I love about this system is that YOU choose what bothers you. It’s not about having someone else assess the condition of your skin, but rather, what concerns you. After all, you know your skin best, and what bothers you!

There’s also a handy Kiehl’s Atlas which has visuals of the different levels of concern in case you want to compare your concerns with what would be considered a good ranking.

All the data is captured in a multiple choice style APP on an iPad at the Kiehl’s store. The data then highlights your two biggest concerns and gives you the perfect mix of targeted complexes.

It starts with the powerful Kiehl’s Strengthening Concentrate base, which includes 35% Squalene to soften and smoothen the skin, as well as a Skin Lipid Complex to hydrate the skin.

Then, based on your survey results, you are given 2 targeted complexes to add to the mix.

The targeted complexes come in these little tubes and are highly concentrated, so they must never be used directly on the skin.

When you get home, you just play pharmacist-pharmacist and create your concoction.

“freshly mix at home”

For me, my two biggest concerns were obviously my pigmentation, so I got the Brightening Complex, and the other stand out concern was redness, so I was given the Visible Redness Neautralzing Complex.

Pretty cool hey?

Well it gets even better.

Did you notice how cool my bottle of serum was by the way?

With this service, you also get a really cool, vintage style label with YOUR personalisation printed on it. It’s got your name printed on it as well as the two complexes that are mixed in.

Remember you have to do the mixing yourself, but it’s all printed for you on the bottle so you know what you’re using

How cool is that?!

After your personalised consult, you get everything you need in a little brown box, which again has everything printed on it.

Everything feels so personalised and I can’t wait to go mix up my very own serum!

Go and check out this service at either Sandton or the V&A Waterfront.

Price wise, you don’t pay for the consultation service, but you do pay for your customised serum which comes to around R1495 for everything. So three products, including the main base serum as well as your two targeted complexes.

Such a cool concept wouldn’t you agree?
