Book clubs used to be about reading books and discussing them in coffee shops over lattes. Then bored housewives used the idea as a cover for drinking wine in the afternoon without being judged. ‘But we were discussing Jane Austen at the time!’

Having already conquered fashion, architecture and art, Prada is now making forays into the book world. They’re swapping housewives for fashionistas, wine for cosmopolitans and Jane Austen for Miuccia Prada’s book, detailing the rise of one of the most prominent names in the fashion industry.

The book, entitled Prada: Creativity, Modernity, Innovation is a 700-plus page book, which documents the iconic and varied projects from the fashion house. The picture-based book conceived and edited by Miuccia and Patrizio Bertelli was created to showcase the creative production of the brand. This creativity spread far beyond just runways and included partnerships with photographers, designers, architects and film directors.
The book is divided into two sections Inside and Outside. The former section traces the history, the design and production processes and what the brand has become since Miuccia inherited her grandfather’s luggage company. If you really wanted to know how far the brand has come since 1987, you’re in luck. The book includes all 3,885 runway looks from past Prada shows.
The Outside section pays homage to the collaborations from the business and arts worlds. Pictures of every single store and design are included as well as insights into the advertising campaigns. There are also video stills from the short film Trembling Blossoms, photos of Prada on the red carpet and on the street, collages of the most coveted bags and shoes and probably the funniest bit, the descriptions by eBay sellers when auctioning their Prada merchandise: ‘Brand Spankin’ New & Soooooooo On-Trend!!!’.
Prada’s Chief Operating Office, Sebastian Suhl, has stated the book is not a retrospective but rather a summary of the past years triumphs. After examining what has been done, you can see how much more can be achieved. If this is what Prada can do in 30 years, imagine what the future holds.
The book is available through www.prada.com and selected Prada stores. It won’t be available in SA until next year but you can pre-order your copy on www.kalahari.net. I just placed my order!
