When it comes to dresses, a regular woman remembers a few pivotal moments. There’s her first school dress. The dress she wore to her matric dance and then finally there’s her wedding dress. For the fashion conscious woman, the dresses that make an impact in her life include the Givenchy dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys, Jennifer Lopez’s infamous Versace dress and then the Galaxy.

Designed by Roland Mouret for his 2005/2006 collection, it has gone on to become an icon in its own right. Available in hoards of colours and worn by hoards of celebrities it quickly became the dress of 2005. Although the A-list fan club, which included Victoria Beckham, Cameron Diaz and Rachel Weiz, was enough to catapult it to stardom the real clinching factor was the covetable shape of the dress. No matter who wore it, the nipped-in waist and knee-length dress afforded the wearer the illusion of a sexy hourglass figure regardless of their actual shape. And without the help of magic knickers!

When Roland Mouret parted company with his financial backers and went on to form the fashion line RM, the dress became a fashion collector’s item. Many chain stores and designers have tried to copy the design as the demand spread from the front row of the runways to the high street. There have been quite a few good copies. I, myself, have a grey one. Although I prefer the term Galaxy-inspired dress rather than Galaxy knockoff :). The only problem was none of these dresses provided women with the same shape mainly due to Mouret’s intricate internal structuring.

If there was ever a reason to believe Santa existed, here it is. It has just been announced that Mouret has designed a slip in the shape of the famous dress. The RM by Roland Mouret Power Mesh is constructed to be worn under your favourite party dress. The stretch slip will retail from R4400. Not as cheap as magic knickers but definitely sexier and more versatile. Launching in time for Christmas, the slip will be available in sheer at Browns and in black on Net-A-Porter. Something tells me the dress will be on the top of many fashionista’s wish-lists.
