Why is it that wearing sunglasses is considered hot and trendy, but reading glasses, considered to be nerdy and un-cool?
Earlier this year my optometrist insisted that I wear glasses for 3 months! This was a serious blow to a girl who has been wearing contact lenses for the past 10 years. Since this was not negotiable, and the prospect of possible surgery and loosing sight was rather daunting, I had to surrender my fight and come to terms with my plight.
Personally, I found wearing glasses to be totally un-fabulous. In fact, I even felt as though they made me fat and worrying about hair and make-up seemed to be utterly pointless. To me, glasses were for an all-night-er spent studying or working. And, I suppose, I have worn glasses on Sundays when I had no intention of having any human interaction. But every day? How was I going to deal with that? Since I could not fathom 3 months of feeling fat/un-fabulous/ugly and blah… I decided to change my attitude.
My first action was to buy a fabulous pair of glasses. I was dreading the possibility of being stuck with wearing some round, tortoise variety. I was pleasantly surprised to find out how much choice is out there these days. After trying hundreds of frames (and driving my optometrist absolutely dilly), I settled on a maroon frame. Surprisingly, the glasses suited me.
Then, something very interesting happened… People started to take me seriously. Yes, I know how that sounds, so let me elaborate: I am 20-something, blond and not an ugly female. Usually, I have to work extremely hard to prove to my potential clients that I do have a brain and know my subject very well. This is the blond/young stereotype I have been fighting since I was 16! Suddenly, the glasses erased all of the preconceived notions and replaced them with another stereotype: glasses = geek, which means she must know what she is talking about. The results were evident and indisputable. I have since found out that some of my friends wear glasses with clear lenses for that exact reason!
After coming to terms with this forced accessory, and reaping the benefits of wearing glasses. I started to question whether or not glasses are sexy. My husband revealed that he found it to be extremely sexy! This was a surprise to me. I started to ask questions and conducted a little mini-research.
Apparently, guys do find them a turn-on. Ok not all of them, as some get intimidated by the possibility of a smart female, and obviously they are the ones whose opinion need not matter much. Thus, I have come to the conclusion that it is possible to wear glasses and still look sexy!
The key is finding the right frames. Since glasses are on your face, and so prevalent, they need to project your unique personality and style. Luckily, today we are spoilt with choice… there are so many styles, colours, shapes and sizes to choose from, that finding the right pair is fairly simple. Wearing glasses has become another form of statement and they are a powerful tool to use in a workplace. So if you’re like me and the possibility of wearing glasses fills you with dread, go and check out fabulous glasses available. Not only will you acquire a new sexy weapon to seduce those men after you’ve won the meeting, you will be doing your eyes a favour too.
I am now saving up for a second pair of glasses. I have tried on Vera Wang frames (which are now available in South Africa) and being a wedding planner, this seems like an ultimate must-have!

I have fabulous glasses too – Valentino frames no less (probably the only Valentino anything I’ll ever own).
Need to go for a check up later this year.
my “Prada” glasses make me hotter even if just read wearing them :)
WOO HOO, so I can see glasses are HOT!
I love my Cranberry Oakleys, definately make up for having to wear glasses…
Hey listen, I agree. Glasses on a lady, while at work, certainly bring a little power to the equation but why not take that home too. Some power play at home can be fun!
Hey banker… don’t you get enough power play at home???!!!
More than you know Eve. More than you know.
