I’ve recently discovered and have been drooling over the Give-it-Bag. They’re these hot, funky little bags made out of the recycled polypropylene bags that arrive in South Africa carrying our rice and other foodstuffs, which are then washed and made into bags. And if a recycled bag is not enough to make you feel like a bit of a saint, fifty percent of money made from the sales goes towards various social issues and charities. So far, money has gone towards kids getting soccer balls, a school getting stationary and elderly people being given the gift of sight.
Apart from the fact that the bags are super cool and super strong, the designs are also limited, because all the sacks are different. So when you buy your limited edition bag, you get a special number that belongs to you. And with that number you are encouraged to log onto www.giveitbag.com and share a good deed you have done and encourage others to get involved.
I love the idea that when you buy a bag, you’re not just buying something fashionable and cool, you’re buying a slice of a better life for someone else.
The company was started by a German couple living in Cape Town with the hope of making the world a better place. The sacks arrive in Cape Town filled with sugar, coffee, rice and maize from countries like Brazil and Thailand and are then processed into a Give-it-Bag using top quality processes. All the parts are made in South Africa and as their website says “It would have been cheaper in Asia, but we’re committed to keeping it local. Not just the bags, but also the labels, stickers and packaging are made here.
It feels good to see the number of people that have jobs since GIVE IT BAG started operating in Cape Town”.
There are about five styles of bag, including small and large versions of the ones pictured, two sizes of backpack as well as a simple bag, and my personal favourite, the sling bag.
