Lack of sun and freakishly cold weather in November could not dampen our spirits, as my friend, Kerryn and I got the chance to attend the ghd Style Lounge in Johannesburg. After a long day at work we were only too glad to unwind, sip on champagne and savor Lindt chocolates, whilst waiting for out transformation to begin.

Durban’s Leigh Schubert and Ruff Tung Designs a delight

Posted on 19 Aug 2009 at 7:52am

Driven by the absence of Durban Fashion Week, this year local designers Leigh Schubert and Jean-Paul Botha of Ruff Tung joined forces along with club owner Athos Euripidou, to create a showcase for their latest collections at the King Club.

The trendy venue, housed within the Durban Playhouse was inspired by a combination between a ‘Parisian men’s club and Dolce & Gabbana’s sexy gold bar in Milan’ and set the tone for a truly stylish night of fashion and glamour.

The Hollywood-style event was well attended by local designers, fashionistas and celebrity guests alike, among whom included gorgeous Top Billing presenter Jo-Ann Strauss and Durban Fashion Week convenor Vanashree Singh.

The night saw innovative ranges that uniquely blend high style with wearable elegance. Causing sensation in magazines and catwalks all over the globe.  The Durban designers are heavily in demand with Schubert, who  just recently returned from showing her collection at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week and Botha celebrating ten years since establishing his label Ruff Tung.

Flirty and feminine are the words to describe Jean-Paul Botha’s Ruff Tung latest collection. His range included garments that are sexy but elegant, classic but fresh and uncomplicated but detailed. Ruff Tung’s clean-cut designs really stood out with their declaration of trendy while at the same time are eminently wearable. He is one of few designers that works closely with his clients to create one-of-a-kind, custom creations.

The Ruff Tung label has caught the eye of some of the hottest celebrities in South Africa, including Isidingo’s Hlubi Mboya and Emmanuel Castis. Funky 5fm DJ Koula as well as Stealing Love Jones lead singer Esjay are also huge fans. Ruff Tung creations are available at Gateway’s Blackbeard & Dare, Gorgeous Delux, and Idols.

With just a few years since launching her solo label ‘Leigh Schubert’, Leigh has gone on to create a global fan base with her collections often having been featured in the latest magazine fashion editorials. Her gorgeous range can now be found at the Leigh Schubert Showroom nestled in the quaint courtyard opposite Market café situated in Marriott Road. Her collection saw a wonderful use of texture and design with feminine ruffles, delicate laces and sexy sheer fabrics combined to create the ultimate look of femininity and timeless style.

An exclusive after party was then held at the Zulu Jazz Lounge where Durban’s ‘A’ list fashionistas partied till the early hours in what was to be a truly stylish affair.

A Night of Fashion and 100 Stars

Posted on 12 Aug 2009 at 8:00am

A gala charity evening was held at Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World to raise funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).  The theme for this year’s glittering event was ‘Dress like a Star’ and an eclectic mix of funky fashion and sassy styling was seen as fashionistas lent their support.

The star-studded event saw a diverse range of fashions and styling ranging from Cinderella evening gowns to sexy cocktail dresses to funky ensembles of contrasting fabrics and prints. Umhlanga’s Sharon Wilson looked gorgeous in a floral print wrap dress teamed with chandelier drop earrings while Idol’s finalist Pixie Bennett opted for a stunning bold print ankle-length dress teamed with a black bow waist belt.

The multi-talented ensemble of performers saw the best South African entertainment has to offer. On the bill were local performers Roots & Wings, stars of the Cape Town City Ballet, Rory Rootenburg, Melanie Roberts, Clive Gumede, Pume Zondi, Lauren Laing, Pop Idol finalist Pixie Bennett, The Sharkettes and dancers from Eeny Meeny Miny Mo Entertainment to name but a few. The MC slot was shared by Aaron & Lisa, stand-up comedian Mark Banks, ‘Isidingo’s’ Robert Whitehead, Durban performer Iain Ewok Robinson and TV personality Terence Pillay.

Cutting edge hair fashions and the season’s top three styles

Posted on 05 Aug 2009 at 7:00am

World renowned Tom Kroboth brings an incredible wealth of talent, passion and creativity in the world of hair styling. He has achieved international acclaim in every possible field of hair fashion, styling shows for Gucci, Chanel and Valentino as well as Roberto Cavalli and Hugo Boss. The global creative Ambassador for Schwarzkopf Professional arrived in Durban for a one night only Hair Show, celebrating 111 years of Schwarzkopf history.

Opening the show was an awe-inspiring performance by Tom Kroboth himself, who created a series of platinum blonde bobs each with its own distinct variation. The Austrian sensation calmly cut and styled the models’ hair live on stage while offering style tips and advice to the amused audience. Kroboth played with texture, waves and volume then presented a collection of various looks creating exaggerated volume and texture in a halo of hair.

As well as the Ambassador for Schwarzkopf Professional, Kroboth is also the European Artistic director for Aveda. His unique creativity and inspiring hair styling techniques were recently awarded with the AIPP Grand Trophy Award – the most prestigious hairdressing photography and presentation contest to date. The AIPP (Association International Presse Professionnelle Coiffure) assembles today,  69 magazines from 34 countries, representing nearly all of the trade publications addressed to hairdressers throughout the world. Kroboth creations are true art – passionate, alluring and extravagant and his outstanding talent comes through in every hairstyle that he crafts.

Hot-Spotting presents this season’s Top Three Styles:

The Bob

The bob is making a come-back with the cut focusing on strong graphic outlines. Incorporate curves and sharp lines into the cut and mix lengths gradually to add volume. You can tailor this cut to suit your face and lifestyle.  Truly a look for the individual.

The Fringe

Fringes are still very hot this season, creating the perfect complement to an elegant, bold cut. Soft and wispy fringes to casual choppy edges and strong, bold lines are all the rage at the moment.

Layers

The cut complements all the others in high fashion circles and why not try a cut with lengthy layers with casual textures? The natural look is easy to create using lots of layers of un-styled, free moving hair. The focus is on natural looking movement and volume, making this a fun and easy way to style your hair this season.
