The 031Collection – Putting Durban Back on The Fashion Map

So last night I headed out to watch the 031Collection, a fantastical fashion event right here in my hometown, Durban. What an amazing event, so well organised, totally styled and very inspiring. As an ex Jo’burger, I’m proud to say I’m a Durbanite these days!

I remember when Durban used to be T-H-E fashion mecca in South Africa, at least, when I lived in Gauteng, I thought so. Anyway, big up to Mr Price for putting Durban back on the fashion map. If this event is anything to go by, Cape Town and Joburg darlings, you’ve got some serious competition. 8 Local Legends, including; Ruff Tung, Nugini Shades, Leigh Schubert, Sibu Msimang, Amanda Laird Cherry, Terrence Bray, The Holmes Brothers and Francois Vedemme showcased their collections with Mr Price New Designer Finalists; Belinda Morgan, Hanrie Lues, Kaila Goss, Claire MacKenzie, Cindy Armstrong, Jacqui Munsumi, Gregory Dladla and Ludwig Bezuidenhout.

The final is going down tonight in Durbs, and we’ll know pretty soon which new designer gets a fashion head start by designing a collection for Mr Price.

All the designs were beautiful, my personal favourites among the legends included, of course, my favourite, Leigh Schubert who always has such amazing pieces that are feminine and almost always with her signature perfect pleats. Keeping my look proudly South African and supporting our countries designers, I wore one of her pieces – a sheer shirt-dress with an amazing tropical print, paired with my Luella thigh-high boots.

I thoroughly enjoyed the collection by the Holmes Brothers – so fun and energetic with a sort of preppy-college-chic look. The little skit at the end of the show was fun and so Holmes Bros! It kinda reminded me of a scene from Grease.

Of course, like the rest of the audience, my jaw dropped at Francois Vedemme’s breathtakingly beautiful collection. Soft, flowy, feminine and such amazing attention to detail. The one dress, the second in the line up I think it was, had me totally awe-struck!

Of the finalists, I loved, loved, LOVED the collection by Jacqui Munsumi (Emmanuel). Gorgeous golds and striking designs! I think I’d wear every single piece, perhaps not quite like the models had it, but I do hope she wins tonight. Holding thumbs!

Speaking of styling, British Supermodel Agyness Deyn is in Durbs, doing the styling for Mr P and this event, but sadly, last night she was’nt there – so I didn’t get to see her *sad face*.

A huge thanks to Mr P for putting Durban back on the fashion map and for producing such an amazing show last night! You guys rock!

I’m afraid none of my stills came out any good on my digital camera, but thank goodness for the pretty good night-light video recording options it has. I hope you enjoy the video… If you’re having trouble viewing it here, check it out on the StyleScoop fan page on Twitter.

If you were there last night, or on any of the other nights, comment below and let me know what you thought.
