Today’s beauty confession is from the fun, witty and highly entertaining beauty blogger Leigh van den Berg, otherwise known as @lipglossgirl.
How did you first get started in the beauty industry?
I worked at Clicks ClubCard magazine for years and used to hog writing all the beauty stories. Eventually, I knew I only ever wanted to write about all things glossy and fabulous. That and score free shizz.
What’s the best thing about your job?
New beauty goodies landing on your desk and getting to drink champers (at launches) and play with make-up during business hours.
What’s the most common questions girls ask you when they find out what you do?
How do I do what you do?’ (Start a blog and promote the hellin’ out of it. If your writing is good and your content is interesting, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t do well).
What was your last thing you purchased?
A (crappy) cup of take-away coffee from the nasty little cafe below the office I’m currently freelancing in. Next time I’ll spring for Vida.
What are your top five beauty products right now?
- ROC Retinol Correxion deep wrinkle serum (I buy it online)
- MAC Lipglass in Flashmode
- Benefit creaseless cream eye shadow in Busy Signal
- Lancome Hypnose mascara
- Rimmel powder blush in Coral
What are your all time fave products? Things you’ve loved since forever and can’t live without?
If any of these babies were discontinued, I’d drive off the side of De Waal drive ‘cos, in my opinion, they’re simply the best at what they’re supposed to do:
- MAC Blot powder,
- Lancome Effacernes waterproof concealer,
- Innoxa Young Solution Spot Drops and
- Clarins Liquid Bronze facial self-tanner.
It’s easy to find a new favourite mascara or eye shadow, but these guys are irreplaceable. I’m also obsessed with Clinique True Bronze bronzing gel for face, L’Oreal Exfotonic body scrub and Crest Whitestrips teeth whitening strips. All three are either discontinued or unavailable in SA, so I track ‘em down on eBay.

Favourite nail polish for summer?
Essie Splash of Grenadine (a pretty purple-y lilac) and Yardley Ruby Red – I think. I tried to double check the name of the latter, but see its rubbed off the bottle. It’s definitely Ruby-something. This is my signature shade.
Favourite scent for the season?
I love Clarins Eau Dynamisante when I hit the beach. It’s alcohol-free so it won’t encourage pigmentation.
What’s your beauty secret/ tip?
Botox! Ha!
