My Festive Christmas Day

This year we hosted Christmas day in our new house and had (almost) the whole fam over. It was a blissful day in Durban, and we really couldn’t have asked for better weather! Sun, food, family and fun, it was the perfect Christmas day…

For starters and pre-Christmas-Lunch-snacks, we did a huge cheese board. I decided to do this after seeing it at the Woolworths Christmas Media day, where they had the most amazing cheese board on display. It looked so festive and so indulgent! It was a good choice and everybody loved it!

I made mine a little more Christmassy by decorating it with tinsel and LED star lights.

My mom in law makes the most amazing bacon rolls and she made a whole batch for Christmas. We added these to the cheeseboard, which I think made it look even more festive! Then it was decorated with glazed fruit, grapes and I even made my own caramelized almonds.

Stanta made a huge drop under our Christmas tree!

After opening our presents, it was time to dig into the food. We made a huge glazed gammon (I lie, we pre-ordered it – shhhh), roast beef, two over-sized roast chickens, potato bake and my favourite, pear and gorgonzola salad.

My sister in law made a huge Moussaka – which is a traditional Greek dish, layered with brinjals, meat filling and a creamy sauce. It’s like the Greek version of Lasagna, only we don’t use pasta for the layering, but instead layer with eggplant.

I added some mini sparklers to my meat before serving it. It made the food look really festive!

I got this giant Ferrero Rocher with my gift from my mom in law. Look how big it is, compared to the battery pack! It was so pretty, I used it as part of my food display.

My table was decorated with a huge red table cloth, fun, colourful crackers and silver accents.

Every year crackers just seem to get worse and worse, while the price goes up and up and the gifts are worthless. On a trip to Makro to stock up on our alcohol, I found these colourful crackers and they were, by far, the best crackers I’ve had. They were only R50 for a pack of six and although the gifts where blah, the packs came with streamer cracker cones, and all the festive decorations (silver stars, paper twirls, and even the sparklers) that I used to decorate my table.

I opened them up and added a sample fragrance to each one, which made them really nice and special. Everyone loved their gifts and they were far more glam than crappy tweezers and plastic picture frames that you get with the R350 cracker packs.

It wouldn’t be Christmas without my famous Mojitos, although this year I cheated and used the Bacardi pre-mix Mojito. It was surprisingly good and tasted great!

After eating and enjoying some time by the pool, we had so much fun playing Singstar. It’s the ultimate party game! None of us can really sing, with the exception of my hubby and my sister in law who put us all to shame, but it’s still fun none the less. The funniest part was listening to my in-laws singing Nelly Furtardo’s Promiscuous Girl! To make matters worse and even better for our entertainment, my mom in law had the part of Timbaland and my father in law was Nelly. I tell you, I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard in ages. I was in tears!

What did you guys get up to? How did you spend Christmas Day?
