Check it out today and make sure you enter my awesome giveaway, where you could win one of these must have nail care devices plus a hamper filled with goodies from Scholl!

As much as I wish I could tell you gals that I spend my days in the nail salon, getting my nails done, I unfortunately don’t have the luxury of time (or money for that matter) – which I am sure is the case with most of you! That’s why I love this Scholl electronic nail pen, because it brings the salon home and I can perfect my tips anytime, anywhere – which is generally while watching re-runs of Ugly Betty or Heart of Dixie.

The Scholl Electronic Nail System is a battery operated nail file that comes with three interchangeable heads. It includes; a filing head, a buffing head and a shining head, each one numbered for ease of reference.

Getting your nails in tip top shape is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Step 1: Filing

Scholl-Velvet-Smooth-Electronic-Nail-Care-System-Pen-review-stylescoop-step-1

I like to start off by shaping my nails. I generally like to keep my nails short and neatly filed. They have a tendency to flare out and I like them square, but rounded, so I use my Scholl filing head (1) to create my shape and smooth out any jagged edges.

The great thing about the electronic nail system is that it applies the perfect amount of vibration to gently file away any chips while smoothing out the edges. No need to saw your nails away.

It has two speed settings, so you can choose which one you prefer. When you first start filing your nails with the nail pen, the vibrating sensation feels a little strange – more so on your eyes than your nails – but once you get used to it, it’s actually pretty easy and you don’t even have to pay too much attention! Just place it on your tips, move the file in the same direction (avoiding a back and forth motion) and slowly moving the nail pen along the edges of the nails.

For Classically Rounded Nails: file the sides of the nails straight and then round off the corners of the nail and filing them a bit more and smoothing over the entire edge. It is important that the nails do not taper towards the middle.

For Oval Nails: simply follow the steps for rounded nails and then even out the corners to create more of an oval shape.

For Edgy Squared Nails: file the nail sides straight and bring the top edge of the nail into a straight horizontal line, creating pointy corners. A popular variant of this is Squoval Nails where the corners of the nail are slightly rounded without drastically changing the square shape of the nail.

For Elegantly Sharp Nails: round off the nail sides first in a diagonal manner, then move vertically along the nail sides in order to completely remove the corners.

Step 2: Buffing

Next its onto step two, buffing! For this part, I use my number 2 brush head, which has a very light buffing texture to gently remove any uneven edges without damaging my nails.

Buffing your nails too aggressively, with a traditional nail file can actually do more damage than good, but this head is gentle enough to ensure you can give your nails a good ol buff without damaging them. Even if you don’t have uneven edges on your nails, this is a great step to remove any excess oils and dead skin to ensure your nail surface is clean and perfectly primed for polish.

Step 3: Shine

The third and final step is shine! For this part I attach my number 3 brush head (the white one) and gently go over my nails with it, until each one has a beautiful, natural and healthy shine.

This step – although so often overlooked really makes for not only more beautiful nails, but your polish application is so much easier and lasts longer because the base you’re painting over is smooth and pretty much spotless.

If you want to go bear, and skip the polish all together, the natural shine will leave your nails finished off and looking well taken care of.

Personally, I love polish and change my colour up all the time, and since I’ve been prepping my nails with the Scholl Electronic Nail Care System, I’m really having fun with my nails while keeping them healthy and happy.

The device is light, compact and be taken with you on the go. The other great thing is that it uses a standard AA battery, so you don’t need any fancy chargers and can pick these batteries up pretty much every where when needed. To add to that, you can purchase replacement kits for the nail heads once you’ve worn them out.

The Velvet Smooth Electronic Nail Care System is available from Clicks, Dischem, PnP and Takealot.com at a recommended retail price of R489.99. The Refill packs can be purchased at a recommended price of R114.99.

This is perfect! I always struggle with over-filing or being too harsh on my nails…to the point where I am hesitant to actually play around with my natural shape for fear of doing more damage than good :/ which is horrible when seeing all these lovely new nail-fashion trends popping up for Winter.
