When it comes to styling up my home, I love nothing more than surrounding my space with unique pieces that add character, warmth and above all, make my home an extension of my personality.
Last year, after scouring the internet for macrame pieces and not finding the one that spoke to me, I decided to try my hand at this craft. Knotting ropes is oddly soothing and I especially love that once a project is finished, I can display my own creation in my home.
I have my macrame pieces scattered everywhere, from the bedroom to the kitchen, and if you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen my latest creations in my guest loo. The most recent being my mini jungle.
Since this space is small, it’s difficult to give it a “personality”, but when I started adding some Macrame to it, I really loved how it gave this small space an earthy, natural look, while keeping it cozy, homey and unique.
I used hemp rope to create the hanging part, with an old basket lid that I had lying around as the tray. I needed a shelf that wouldn’t take up any space in this small corner, and one that could still hold my plant and look cute. My poor plant was dying on the windowsill after receiving such harsh exposure from the sun.
This hanging wall display (that started off the guest loo Macrame styling) was intended as a weird and wonderful front door accessory. Something like a wreath, but different. I wanted something beautiful to greet me when I walked into my home and when I found this piece of wood in my garden, I thought it would be the perfect foundation for my macrame display.
As much as I loved looking at this piece on my front door, just out of curiosity, I thought I’d try it out in the guest loo, which has a narrow wall that you can’t really do much with. Once I saw it there, I was sold and knew that would be it’s new home.
So I had to create something else for the front door. I still wanted something there and I decided to go with a traditional wreath for this space instead.
Finding a wreath that I could use as the foundation was no fun at all. I couldn’t for the life of me, find anywhere local where I could just buy the wreath frame and wrap it with hemp rope. So I used and old Christmas wreath I had in storage, wrapped it with masking tape and then just wrapped the rope around it. It didn’t turn out too bad, and if I’m honest, it actually worked better than I had expected.
Ideally, I’d have loved for my front door wreath to be bigger, but I’m still happy with the outcome. The cotton rope mixed in with the natural hemp rope against the wooden frame of the door and the glass panels looks beautiful.
For this piece, I tried out a few other macrame projects that I could add to it like charms, so the macrame flower and the tassel feather were tied onto the jute rope and since I created this piece in winter, a bit of pampas grass made it perfect for the season.
I may add something more seasonal for spring, but I don’t know, I kind of love it as it is.
