Road tripping is my favourite mini-adventure, so when Ford invited me to join them at the launch of the new Ford Fiesta, little did I know that I was in for a bucket list treat.
The destination was a secret, right up until I got behind the wheel of the styling new Ford Fiesta!
A car designed to Go Your Way! A car to match your attitude as you make your way up the ladder – and do it in style! And, since the new Ford Fiesta is all about making your way into the world of awesomeness, Sun City was the perfect destination to launch this fierce and feisty little car.View Post
When was the last time you jumped in your car and drove? No plans, no map and no idea where you’re headed? Those “let’s see where the open road takes us” opportunities are rare, but when they happen, that’s when you find the best best kept secrets! I spent last week, just like that. Driving around in the new Ford Mustang, with no set plan and just seeing where the road leads. One of those roads (and there were many), led me to the coolest retro styled Roadhouse, where I found the best milkshakes in Jozi. Growing up in the 90’s, we didn’t have drive through fast food joints and Roadhouses were all the rage. They were also the place to go if you wanted a thick and delicious shake to wash down a seriously loaded burger, or an oozing toasted cheese. Ya know, the ones wrapped in paper with a little gherkin on top? I miss those days! So what an awesome throwback it was to find Kota Joe Roadhouse and get a blast from the past – but this time, in a true American Muscle Car. Back in the day, our parents (or grandparents for some of you) must’ve gotten quite…View Post
This past week, I had the pleasure of driving the Ford B-MAX, the little car with a big attitude! Now a cool car is one thing, but one that’s kitted with all the bells and whistles makes it all the more exciting, and the B-MAX is styled with impressive features to actually claim the title of cool cat on the road…View Post
This weekend I got to test drive the cute, new Volkswagen UP! The small car, with a big attitude! The UP! is VW’s compact city car, and it’s the perfect little run around car that looks as funky as it feels. Surprisingly responsive, the 55kw engine has a decent amount of power, and considering I’m used a much bigger engine, I didn’t feel deprived – only a little when overtaking on the highway. The UP! is smaller than the VW Polo, and I think it’s way cuter and funkier. It’s almost got that up and coming yuppie attitude. At 3,54 meters long and 1,64 meters wide, one of the features I loved was being able to squeeze into small parking spaces (something I can’t do in my FJ – although I usually just climb the pavement *wink*). I love the Interior. It’s got a touch of sporty funkiness and very spacious, although I did find that there is very limited console space. When I first opened the boot I was like whhhhhatt! Where am I supposed to put my shopping?! Until I discovered a hidden compartment that practically doubles up the boot space. Such a cool feature! The model I…View Post
It’s not often that I get to attend a fancy soirée right here in Durban. But yesterday I attended the 10 year celebration of Daytona Motors in South Africa, at their Umhlanga branch – Daytona Rocks! Not only did we enjoy a fabulous event with amazing food, music and entertainment, but we got to see some amazing sports cars, including the unveiling of the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S and the Rolls-Royce Wraith, as well as a few other lookers. Amongst all the metal perfection, one car definitely stole my heart, and really got my pulse racing, the Mclaren MP4-12C! Hubba Hubba! What a car! I mean, I could seriously see myself in one of these (despite it being ridiculously awkward to get in and out of – but who cares – IT IS THAT HOT!). Universe, if you’re listening to me, please send one of these machines my way… I’ll take it in any colour, but the Volcano Orange is my fave! I mean seriously, it’s obvious we were made for each other – don’t you think?! Ya, I have a serious grin on my face, but this car will do that to you! Guaranteed! To see more of these beautiful cars, check out a…View Post
Wow, I had such a blast in this car! The other day, the fab folk at Hillcrest Toyota were kind enough to loan me a Toyota FJ Cruiser for the day – just for fun! I drove it round and about Durbs, and have to admit that I am totally smitten with it’s awesomeness! I want one!!! It’s bold, it’s rugged and it’s powerful! When you get behind the wheel of this beautiful beast, you can’t help but feel the adventure junkie take over! Now, I don’t consider myself adventurous at all. I avoid roller coasters and pretty much anything that gets my adrenaline pumping – but just one day with the FJ and I feel the urge, the need, the excitement to take it crawling up some cliffs! Not that I did, I mean we only had one day together, but you know what I mean! The FJ Cruiser is all attitude! It can go-anywhere-and-do-anything (their words not mine, and I believe them)! It’s stylish and retro with a wild side that will turn heads! Expect to be noticed behind the wheel of the FJ! I absolutely love the signature white roof, rugged black bumpers and all round aggressiveness. The FJ Cruiser is an updated version of…View Post
“Be careful what you ask for” is the lesson I’ve learnt the last couple of weeks, or perhaps “ask and ye shall receive” is more apt. You see, I receive test vehicles from the respective manufacturers in South Africa, if and when they can accommodate me. I usually murmur grumpily to myself that I don’t receive enough test cars. Well that has not been the case the past few weeks. I’ve been busy, often having two different test cars parked in my driveway at the same time. Suspicious looks from the neighbours are a given. So for today, I’m shaking things up a bit on this thunderous, throbbing Thursday and giving you a two-for-one review. A two car ‘quickie’ if you like. A KingCab fit for a Queen Ok, so you may scoff at the thought of driving a bakkie. And I admit that few of you ladies will actually be attracted to driving one. The average South African male will, though, and this means that at some point in your life, you will too. These days’ bakkies are becoming the lifestyle vehicle of choice for the trendy and outdoor types, especially the mountain bike and dirt bike fraternity. Especially…View Post
Over the past two years I’ve had many memorable drives in many fantastic vehicles. The Subaru WRX and BMW 335i Coupe jump to mind, but like all things, with the good comes the bad and often even the ugly. The Scooby’s outrageous fuel consumption fulfilling ‘ugly’ more than adequately and the beemers hefty price tag the ‘bad’. Time and again though, the car that springs to mind as my all time favourite is the Suzuki Swift Sport. For me it ticked all the right boxes. Street cred – you bet. A peppy little naturally aspirated engine with a racy exhaust note – Oh yes. Go-kart handling – That’s another tick. And at the time, all for under 200 grand! But, let’s be honest. While we’d all love a hot hatch as a daily runabout but they aren’t hugely practical. And in the Swift Sports case, not even available anymore. And so we’re left with the bread and butter models in the range. The volume sellers. The profit makers. In the Suzuki Swift’s case, these models translates to roughly 4200 units since June 2008 and over 2 million worldwide since 2004. That’s pretty good going for a bit player. Fortunately in…View Post
Let’s be honest, there are far more desirable shapes to be seen in than that of the boxy dimensions which afflict all people movers. But to be fair they do serve an array of different purposes, primarily they move people, and in some cases products or even animals and in sometimes all of the above. Families are people movers biggest target market, and considering I quite happily fall into this category, I was quite chuffed when given the keys to the Mazda 5 2.0 Individual for the week. Ok, wifey and I do only have one child, and I’d imagine families with a few more munchkins would better suit the Mazda 5’s, nevertheless Vaughn, our three year old son has many fiends and thus this would be the ultimate test for the Fives family friendly tendencies – a whole clan of the messy unruly little buggers. I’ve always admired the Mazda 5, the previous generation at least. There isn’t a whole lot designers can do with essentially a box on wheels, but the Five was smart, stylish and even quite handsome if I may say so. Sadly, new Five has brought in Mazda’s new flowy, messy, Japanese Manga styling and…View Post
Towards the end of 2010, at the Paris Motor Show, Jaguar revealed its concept supercar, the C-X75. Concept cars are by no means new to auto shows, in fact manufacturers use these international events to showcase their very latest technology and design facets that they say will eventually filter down into everyday cars, that we, Joe Public would be able to buy. More often than not, and similarly to international fashion events where outlandish and over the top designs are showcased to the fashion world, but are completely impractical to be worn by the average women or man, so too are international motor shows. Unremarkable by name, yes, but truly remarkable by application the Jaguar C-X75 was recently awarded the Louis Vuitton Classic Concept Award 2010 by a panel of luminaries from the worlds of design, fashion and luxury. Undoubtedly the star of the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the C-X75 – judged by a Louis Vuitton panel – has once again beaten stiff competition. The panel was led by renowned automotive consultant and inaugurator of the prize, Christian Philippsen. “Ian Callum, Jaguar’s design director, and his team have achieved not only a beautiful design in clothing a world-premiere and mouth-watering…View Post
If you take a keen interest in cars and live in Cape Town, this week on your daily commute you may have noticed a few large open top BMW’s, possibly driven by men and women not entirely suited to a car of such stature, and maybe in some cases accompanied by an enthusiastic cameraman. There is good reason for this, BMW has chosen our Mother City as its premier world destination to showcase its spanking new 6 Series. That they chose such a beautiful part of the world to showcase their new Grand Turismo is not surprising, however choosing to introduce the 6 series in convertible form first, is though. See, in most new car launches the convertible is usually the last in the model lineup to be introduced, so in this case one would assume BMW makes no qualms that, wind in the hair motoring, best encapsulates what is the essence of its new 6 series. Personally I thought the previous generation 6 Series was the prettiest in the BMW range, and although all-new the new 6 Series is more evolution than revolution. Taking its design cues from the new 5 series it cuts a taught, athletic profile –…View Post
For most of us, climate change is not a priority in our lives. Yes, we constantly read about it in the newspapers and we’re bombarded by doomsday scientists on Discovery Channel babbling on about catastrophic worldwide repercussions if we, the ordinary folk on the street don’t drastically change the way we lead our lives.View Post
