After interning at various magazines in many different departments for over two years, including FAIRLADY (twice), I interned in the Beauty Department and simply fell in love with it. After the beauty assistant at the time left, I decided to apply for the job and here I am today! Almost a year later! What’s the best thing about your job? Seeing your name in the byline of a story, being able to test fabulous products, communicating with fantastic clients who represent iconic brands, attending beauty launches, and lastly, living out my passion, which is beauty. We have another confession for you today, and it comes from Pippa Alcock, Beauty Editor at Woman & Home Magazine… How did you get started in the beauty industry? I started as a fashion assistant, moved onto the grooming pages, then into PR where I worked on a few beauty clients, and finally to beauty editing. What’s the best thing about your job? Attending fab launches with my fellow beauties, interviewing international beauty ambassadors, getting real insight into a multi-billion dollar industry, shooting gorgeous beauty stories and of course, painting my nails at my desk is part of the job description! What’s the most common questions girls ask you when they find out what you do? “Which skincare range is the best?” Truth is, good skincare is much more than what you put on your face. While I was still studying, I got an internship with the fabulous Suzy Josephson who was the Beauty Editor at Marie Claire in 2002. What’s the best thing about your job? Trying-out all the fabulous new products and treatments. As well as being in an industry with such amazing people. What’s the most common questions girls ask you when they find out what you do? “What did you study to get your job?” Answer: Um, finance… It has so much to do with working hard, and being in the right place at the right time. Today’s beauty confession comes from celebrity makeup artist and blogger, @eloisemakeup – Eloise Dreyer. How did you get started in the beauty industry? It never started at a certain point for me. It’s always been there. It’s as natural as breathing to me. It manifested though when my mother taught me to always look after my skin no matter what and that I should feel pretty for myself, no one else. What’s the best thing about your job? I get to learn about the most amazing advances in skin care technology, sample fragrances, play with colour when it comes to cosmetics, see the radiant faces of my models and clients after I’ve worked on them and make friends with like-minded people. Today’s beauty confession come from @ChereenGibson, resident Beauty Editor at O, The Oprah Magazine. How did you first get started in the beauty industry? I started out as the junior sub-editor at Woman & Home, and was soon promoted to features writer and travel editor. It was on a press trip to Mauritius that I realised that my passion for all things beauty, combined with my writing ability and creativity, would stand me in good stead to work as a beauty editor – something I’d wanted to do since I was a little girl. I guess my previous editor must have seen it too, as she offered me the position of beauty and health editor in 2009. I’ve since started as the beauty editor at O, The Oprah Magazine, which is a dream come true. I have always dreamt of being on the Oprah show, but never though that I would have the opportunity to work on such a fantastic brand with such a talented, inspiring and supportive team. Today’s beauty confession is from @KimGray, one of my oldest blogging buddies… How did you first get started in the beauty industry? Being a stylist in the fashion industry, I noticed that girls always gravitate to the make up artist make-up box, and quickly realized that girls love to to know what the latest and greatest products are and other peoples opinions on them. And so I added beauty reviews to my blog, along side the fashion and design content. What’s the best thing about your job? Testing out all the beauty products of course! I also like to give back – so after trying and testing and when the beauty cupboard is full, I donate all the beauty goodies to Code Teen where the beauty products are distributed among raped and abused and usually underprivileged girls. Today we catch up with the gorgeous @toritatham, Victoria Tatham of the bubbly beauty blog, Kiss Blush and Tell How did you get started in the beauty industry? I studied beauty when leaving school and worked in the industry for a few years when I lived in London – from managing a five star spa to doing make-up at London Fashion Week – I loved every bit of it, however wanted to grow in the advertising industry, so returned home to study again. I keep up my love and knowledge for beauty through my blog, where I meet great people and get to try exciting new products. What’s the best thing about your job? I absolutely love working at Ogilvy (Victoria’s day job is as an Account Executive at Ogilvy Cape Town). Being the biggest advertising agency in the world I am surrounded by incredibly creative and inspiring people and get the chance to work on really exciting brands – this means that I am constantly stimulated and challenged, which is really important to me. Aren’t you just loving these Beauty Girl’s Confessions? Today’s confession comes from the proud new mama and gorgeous Beauty Editor at ELLE magazine South Africa, Lynette Botha – @Ms_ELLE_Beauty. Don’t you think she looks just like Kate Hudson? How did you first get started in the beauty industry? I started at ELLE as the features writer, moved to the position of production and sub-editor and the got lured by the pull of beauty when the beauty editor position became available. I haven’t looked back since and strongly believe that everything happens for a reason. What’s the best thing about your job? Being able to be creative on a daily basis. Having the opportunity to conceptualise and execute shoots and features that interest me and ELLE readers. Today’s beauty confession is from essentials Magazine‘s Health and Beauty Editor, Tessa Passmore How did you first get started in the beauty industry? I studied at UCT and interned at Marie Claire for a while in Cape Town. I then moved to London and went to Central Saint Martins (a summer school student) where I studied more fashion orientated/ magazine subjects. In London, I interned in the fashion industry, at a PR for Stella McCartney. I returned to South Africa and began working as an intern for essentials. I became a features writer and eventually the Beauty Editor in August 2010. The beauty industry is so exciting and current. Worldwide there is no seasonal difference between products – very different to fashion, which can be quite dated down South here in SA. What’s the best thing about your job?
