How To Shop Smarter, Spend Less & Love Your Wardrobe

How To Shop Smarter, Spend Less & Love Your Wardrobe

Buying new clothes can be exciting. It can also be a taunting experience, never mind stressful; especially with the big fat dent that’s left in your wallet. New season means new clothes right? Wrong! Over the years, I’ve learnt to shop smarter. I was just tired of having a cupboard full of clothes, and still faced with the common dilemma that is I have nothing to wear!

Haute Couture: A beginners guide

Haute Couture: A beginners guide

With the launch of Paris Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2011, haute couture is again all over the fashion blogs and news sites. We take it for granted that the outrageous and inconceivable will be sent down the runway, encasing nervous looking models who try to keep a straight face as they’re trussed up in some of the most complicated and painful looking creations ever. Some might say, what’s the point? Haute Couture (translated to mean high fashion) exists only in Paris where it’s protected by strict criteria, such as the amount of work carried out by hand, the limited number of pieces and the size of the fashion house’s workforce. It can only be afforded by a small handful of women around the world, for who each garment is painstakingly, handmade to suit her specific measurements, and it makes the fashion houses almost no money at all, but without it, fashion wouldn’t be the same. Many critics think of it as fashion’s ultimate frivolity, but without it we wouldn’t get to see a glimpse of a designer’s fantasy bought to life by some of the world’s most skilled seamstresses. It’s a feast for the eyes. It’s everything that’s outrageous and inspirational…

The denim shorts trend

The denim shorts trend

It’s a denim summer. Denim shirts.  Denim dresses. Denim skirts.  Denim on denim. But one of the easier denim looks is a pair of denim shorts, either bought or the result of cutting up a pair of old jeans. The shorter the better this season. So that means gym and self-tan for me.  It does not however mean hot pants.  No-one needs to be that well acquainted with your butt cheeks. The inner white pockets should not stick out the bottom and your short shorts should be worn with thin, slouchy tees, delicate scarves, strappy flats and maybe a cute blazer a la Kate Moss. These shorts are casual, but needn’t be super day-at-the-beach casual, so don’t be afraid to add some jewels like a lovely statement neck-piece or bracelet. Cuffs are on-trend, so if you’re chopping up your old jeans, leave enough length to roll up a small cuff. One style must-do: make sure your shorts aren’t tight as well as short.  A looser look is better (and will save on bulgy bits on your thighs). Maxi-mum comfort

Maxi-mum comfort

The jersey maxi is one of my have-to-haves for summer. It’s comfortable and easy to wear. It’s also ultra feminine and a snap to dress up and down.  Perfect as a beach cover-up or a chic evening dress, this will be your favourite wardrobe item for summer.

Messy bed, messy head!

Messy bed, messy head!

New Years Day, Ramadaan and Spring. These are just some of the events that mark the start of a new beginning. Sometimes work and life get’s the better of us and we find ourselves in need of a change mid-year. This is good, in fact I encourage it.

Your spring/summer 2009 trends shopping list

Your spring/summer 2009 trends shopping list

Spring is sprung, the grass is riz, I wonder where the end of the recession is? As spring unfolds in South Africa, I’m sure you are all eager to peel away the depressing layers of the financial recession, in the same way that you peel away the layers of jersey as you move into summer. However, although many have predicted that the recession will end, no-one has yet been willing to put their head on the chopping block and declare these frugal times at an end… and so there’s still a bit of belt-tightening in order. Which is good, ‘cos the “waisted” look is so hot right now! So, it’s spring, and a new season means only one thing… shopping! The SA fashion weeks are over and I’m sure you’re super-inspired to bulk up your closet with the hottest looks off the catwalk. A whole new wardrobe of fabulous colours, patterns and looks to keep our hearts going skippity skip… all purchased on a strict budget of course. Don’t forget all those frugal fashion rules we’ve learned gals! Most importantly, don’t let your wardrobe get out of balance… although is very tempting to go crazy and purchase a range of…

Surviving sale season on a budget

Surviving sale season on a budget

It’s that time of the year that I both love and dread! The Summer Sales! Twice a year the UK High Street experiences a strange phenomenon during, which time department stores slash their prices to a drastic version of their former selves. Across the country, these stores are in a frenzy with fashionistas, displaying those rare moments of uninhibited emotion as they scramble for that last pair of bargain Gucci sandals reduced by 50%. Traditionally, this fashion calendar highlight ensures that there are no losers – the stores make a killing, getting rid of unwanted stock before the next season’s arrivals and the fashion-hungry consumers grab a serious bargain or two. This year, however, the situation is a little different. Gone are the days when we can rationalise the vast expenditure with the notion that you would normally have bought that pair of purple, suede knee-high boots for double the price – but now that they’ve been discounted you can buy another pair in red as well. The harsh reality is that we can no longer fool ourselves into frivolous purchases.  The truth is that if it weren’t for that brief moment of euphoria that caused us to go a little giddy…
