Dine in Style at the Hussar Grill

Dine in Style at the Hussar Grill

I never pass up the opportunity to dine in style and when you add award winning speciality steaks and delicious wine to the mix, it is a match made in foodie heaven. We recently enjoyed a night of glorious food at The Hussar Grill at The Grove, and if you haven’t been yet, be sure to add this spot to your list of places to dine out. Beautiful decor; mirrored walls lined with wine racks and stacked with a collection of old Reader’s Digest books. It’s elegant and chic with plush, quilted chair backs and tables draped in crisp white linen. While you definitely go to The Hussar Grill for the food (and top notch service for that matter), I love the ambiance and the decor. It’s a grander version of traditional chain steak houses, but it’s also cozy and welcoming and has that old school, quality charm. We had the most magnificent meal. Seriously, I kid you not, I could hardly stand up straight, but in a good way. It might have been the delicious 50th Anniversary wine we enjoyed *wink* , but more likely that my tastebuds were experiencing euphoria. On arrival, we were greeted by the smartly dressed…

Breakfast in “Italy”

Breakfast in “Italy”

One of the downsides of living in South Africa (as apposed to Europe) is that we can’t jump in our Fiat 500 or take short plane ride to have breakfast in Italy. But, we can still get a taste of the Italiano Felicità and Mama Mia of authentic Italian style dining right here in South Africa. Of course I’m talking about Old Town Italy. With branches at Menlyn Maine and Umhlanga, this my friends is as close to Italy as we can get without leaving South African soil – and if you haven’t been, you’re missing out! Hubby and I visited the Menlyn branch for a quick brunch and it was amazing! The only that was missing was arriving in our Vespa! It’s beautifully decorated to make you feel like you’ve stepped into a true Italian market; complete with an Italian deli, meat “market” and even a Gellateria. It all feels very authentic and I loved being able to pick up some Italian cheeses and artisan breads on our way home after brunch. Shopping the market was a great way to work off our full bellies and to discover some delightful foodie treats you don’t see every day. The food, and…

Good Food, Great Friends at Culture Club

Good Food, Great Friends at Culture Club

Pretoria friends of ours suggested we go for lunch “in their hood” to the vibey Culture Club Tapas Bar this past Sunday, and I felt like I had discovered a whole new world of awesome dining experiences! Nestled in a really cool restaurant strip called “The Villiage” in Hazelwood, this spot was such a great find! We had the best food, the best service and honestly, such a chilled and relaxed noon-into-dusk Sunday, it made me feel like I was back in Europe! If you haven’t heard of Culture Club before and you’re close to Pretoria, then be sure to add this spot to your list of amazing dining experiences. I plan to make my way through the whole “Village” because it’s such a great place to spend winding down your weekend – with good food, great friends, great ambiance and of course, great cocktails in hand! As for my photos, these are the best I could do for this little outing. Sorry, but when you have six people all eagerly diving into all the colourful and interesting Tapas as they arrive at your table, it makes “getting the perfect food shot” quite challenging. I too was amongst those diving into the delights, and only…

Do this Weekend at Mustang Sally’s

Do this Weekend at Mustang Sally’s

If you’re looking for something super cool to try this weekend, I’ve got you covered! Just put on your cowboy boots (ok, you don’t really need cowboy boots) and head North to Mustang Sally’s, the coolest, retro, pub and diner Gauteng has ever seen! It’s off the charts! With milkshakes that will blow your mind, and food that’s so yummy and loaded, you probably won’t have room for dessert! My regular readers will know that I think nothing goes better together quite like Mustangs and Milkshakes. The two are made for each other, and I got to experience the true American spirit at an authentic American diner! Last month the awesome folk of Ford South Africa, treated a bunch of us to a day of Mustang. We got to eat burgers, gobble down killer shakes, play pin ball, have fun, and of course admire the beauty that is the gorgeous Ford Mustang.

Jacarandas in Cullinan

Jacarandas in Cullinan

Going to see the Jacarandas in full bloom in Cullinan has been something I’ve wanted to do for ages. Last year, we attempted to go and see them, but I think we might have been a bit too late as they had already finished blooming in November. This year though, I wasn’t about to let them get away from me.

Romantic Weekend Getaway

Romantic Weekend Getaway

Last weekend was one of the best we’ve had in ages. In March, we celebrated our 8-year wedding anniversary and I really wanted to do something special, so we headed out to “the country” for a romantic weekend getaway at the beautiful Kievits Kroon Country Estate in Pretoria. This 16-hectare estate is a true gem! It’s like being in the beautiful Cape Winelands, without venturing too far from home. Well, if your home is in jozi that is! Lush and tranquil, Kievits Kroon is a country escape that has everything you need to relax, unwind and enjoy life’s little pleasures. From the moment you enter the estate, Manor Lane greets you a with a breathtaking pathway lined with the most beautiful setting of trees. As you drive through the estate, you cant help but appreciate all the picture perfect scenery that awaits. We took advantage of the surroundings and snapped some pics of my new trench coat which I love, but for today, I want to tell you all about our stay, and I’ll share the style post with you tomorrow. We checked into our VIP Suite on Friday afternoon and spent some time exploring and admiring the grounds before our dinner reservation at the Granita Restaurant. What I absolutely love about Kievits Kroon’s accommodation,…

3 Burger Joints to Try This Weekend

3 Burger Joints to Try This Weekend

If you don’t have anything planned this weekend, then check out my three favourite burger joints to give you something yummy and fun to do….  Rocomammas – Rivonia Go there for hip vibes, craft beer and a “not so normal burger” Rocomamas have the BEST BURGERS in town! Even more than that, the option to customise your burger (exactly how you want it), and the hip and vibey staff make this a great place to hang while you fill up on good food. The menu concept is pretty cool! You get a form with a whole bunch of options on it, and you basically check the box to customise your creation to your heart’s content! So let’s say you start with a 150g Smashed Beef Burger, then you want to add Blue Cheese Dressing, Pickles, Caramalized Red Onions and lets say Bacon, just check all the options, choose whether you want fries or not and then give it to your waiter. This customization allows you to go a little crazy (if you’re into that), but they also have the option to choose their standard burgers like the Classic Cheese, Old Skool, Bacon Cheese & Guac or the Rock Star. I thought I was…

Grand White Dinner – Pretoria 2015

Grand White Dinner – Pretoria 2015

The #GrandWhiteDinner, was held for the first time in Pretoria this year, and what an amazing event to be part of! The secret location, which ended up being the beautiful Pretoria Botanical Gardens, was only revealed a few hours before the event. Thousands of guests gathered, dressed in all white with a touch of green to eat delicious food, listen to live music, drink champers and just have a good time! And a good time was surely had! I swear, I felt like like I was an extra in some surreal movie scene. Life-size porcelain dolls, jugglers, ribbon dancers, stilt walkers and more walked about, while amazing acts including French DJ -Didier Moesus, Jody & Callen from Acoustic Element, songstress Lisa Goldin and singer Ricky Botsis swooned us with their sound. The MC for the night was none other than funny man, Marc Lottering, who was such a pleasant guy that had no problem with hoards of fans approaching him to get their picture taken. Speaking of pictures, I snapped away all day and night, to give you guys a little taste of this fabulous event. This event is definitely going down on my list of things to do every year! If you’ve never been before, trust me when I say…

Park Acoustics with GAP

Park Acoustics with GAP

The thing I love about Jozi, is there’s always something to do! About two weeks ago, the hubz and I headed to Park Acoustics courtesy of GAP. It’s such a fun vibey event, and definitely a fabulous way to spend your Sunday! Park Acoustics happens every last Sunday of every month at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria. August’s event took place inside the Fort, and it was a really great way to watch some cool local acts including; Boo!, New Academics, Momentss & Manny Walters and Pretoria locals George Town. It was great fun, but we were kinda silly and didn’t come prepared for the sun, so sadly didn’t get to see all the bands. But seriously, 27 degrees in Jozi in September! I didn’t expect that! I packed my trusty “on-the-go” picnic basket (Salticrax, Smoked Oysters and Tabasco Sauce) and we watched the show from what seemed to be the “kings seats”, on the edge of the fort walls, looking down at the acts 🙂 Next month it’s going to be even better, and I will at least take sunscreen and a hat! I can’t wait for the 28th! I’ve added the flyer to the end of the post, but stick around because I’ll be hosting a…
