Discovering Hidden Treasures – Handmade By Fundi

Discovering Hidden Treasures – Handmade By Fundi

A little while back I went on a fun “Insta-drive” with the iStore and Mini – where we drove around Jozi, discovering cool spots of our city to snap. On our little adventure into the heart of the city – Maboneng, I discovered a hidden treasure! Tucked away in an unsuspecting building, I found a talented artist, hard at work, creating the most amazing, bold and graphic print clutch purses. His name is Fundi and his label, simply called Handmade by FUNDI. He makes unique African inspired pieces, entirely by hand (including cutting and stitching), using a combination of pure cow leather and striking, African print fabrics that are 100% cotton. The result! Totally drool worthy, statement accessories that will no doubt, add interest any personality to just about any outfit! His range not only includes clutches, but also shoulder bags, backpacks and laptop bags, earrings, necklaces and custom-made pieces. I particularly LOVED the cute clutch purses! They were impeccably well made! Such a great, proudly South African brand and such a talented artist! Check out Handmade by FUNDI on Facebook for more on his beautiful pieces.

I Chatted to KLûK CGDT About Their YSL Tuxedo Palette Inspired Look

I Chatted to KLûK CGDT About Their YSL Tuxedo Palette Inspired Look

Last week, I had the privilege of meeting talented design duo, KLûK CGDT.  I got to chat to them about their interpretation of the Yves Saint Laurent Tuxedo Palette and the look they created, inspired by a key moment in the history of Mr Saint Laurent. To celebrate, 50 years of YSL, KLûK CGDT together with seven of SA’s top designers, were invited to create a fashionable piece, interpreting the new YSL Couture Colour Palettes (more on that soon). Each designer was given one of the eight palettes to work with, and asked to use the palette to design a runway look that was showcased at the 2014 SA Style Awards, that took place at Hyde Park Corner on Sunday the 23rd November. KLûK CGDT was given the task of interpreting the first palette in the collection, No1 TUXEDO, a smokey eyeshadow palette with shades of grey, taupe, charcoal and black. When I spoke to Malcolm and Christiaan at Hyde Park Corner the next day, I asked them how it felt to interpret a palette by such an iconic YSL Classic. Malcolm said it was like looking after someones’ baby! For their show-stopping feathered creation, that got heads turning as it opened the SA Style Awards Fashion Show, KLûK CGDT drew inspiration from the palette to bring this look to life. They wanted to make…

Out with the old, in with the (almost) new

Out with the old, in with the (almost) new

You know what they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, right?  How about clothes?  Vintage is a fairly new fashion buzzword and in my opinion, a great way to make old, used clothes more fashion-fab rather than trailer-park-drab. What would you rather say; “I love mixing vintage pieces with jeans” or “I love wearing these old jeans that I bought from a jumble sale (remember those) at my neighbours trailer”? Yeah exactly! When you think of used clothes, old comes to mind.  However used clothes do not have to look ratty and drab, in fact they don’t have to be that old at all.  Think about how many things you’ve bought an item, worn it once and shoved into the back of your closet?  Oftentimes the only reason people get rid of clothes, besides wanting to make space for new items, is because they have either worn the piece to death, outgrown it or the item has lost it’s appeal.  That doesn’t mean that the appeal is lost to everyone though. The other day I got an email from Tonia Zorbas, who is part of a great South African project called Fashion Exchange.  It’s a local company that…
