The Girl Next Door tells the story of a group of people living in a New York City apartment block. It is essentially, but not exclusively, about relocated English couple Ed and Eve and how new surroundings upset the balance in their relationship. The storyline also includes sub-plots revolving around the people who live in a few of the other apartments in the block and their own relationships. Some of these sub-plots seemed to be disjointed from the main story and besides happening in the same building have no link to Ed and Eve’s story. Perhaps this was meant to be a commentary on how isolated people living in the city could be, even though they are surrounded by people every day. I would have liked to see the stories more intertwined, and feel the roof terrace planning would have been an ideal vehicle for this. Ed and Eve are brought back towards each other and ultimately back to England by a heart rendering loss that could have torn other couples apart. Besides this, the book is an easy read and a good option for a relaxing unwinding session before bedtime.

A beautifully, fabulous book that has just the right mix of love, sadness, drama and suspense.

You become one of the neigbours of the building and get a glimpse into the various lives of it’s tenants.

It’s a really great, relaxing book that makes you feel like party of the story
