Our interview with Junkyard Angel art director and stylist

The newly launched label Junkyard Angel has got everyone talking. StyleScoop got an exclusive interview with Junkyard Angel’s innovative art director and fashion stylist, Angelique Jansen van Rensburg.

Ange, tell us a bit about the Junkyard Angel label
Junkyard Angel is a high-impact, whimsical fashion label exclusive to the YDE. This youthful label has a seriously flirty, feminine and glamorous feel. Designed for fun loving fashionistas who have an individual sense of style, and who love experimenting with their wardrobe, using fashion as a form of self-expression by putting their very own personal signature into every ensemble.

What inspired the styling for this collection?
I am a serious junkie for trend mash-ups, and a firm believer in making everything your own. So I wanted to showcase Junkyard Angel as the versatile label it is. Tailor made for young trendy woman throughout South Africa – no matter what their style.

I wanted to encourage the Junkyard Angel customers to cut loose from the fashion rulebook, and rather than follow trends blindly, to put their own personal flavour into each and every look, to mix things up and get creative.

In order to create a fashion fusion feel, I pulled inspiration from a wide range of diverse high-impact contrasting, trends and trendsetters. Researching and blending a mixture of past and current international catwalk and high-street trends formed a style, which blurred the lines between current trends, past classics and personal quirks.

Every detail was inspired and thought out from over the top jewels, feathers, gaga gloves, crowns, feathers were inspired by the rebellious, ultra edgy Pixie Lott, contrasting with the fresh, glowing, youthful, innocent of the doll-like models.

I really wanted to give the Junkyard Angel customers the ideas and inspiration to create their own personal ensembles, which are the perfect blend of your favourite new Junkyard Angel garment hot off the rail combined with anything… Something you found in the back of your mom’s wardrobe from the 70’s? A little something you brought from a market 2 years ago? A paired with your favourite designer shoes from New York… there are no rules.

Personal style is key! Do you have any tips for our readers on creating their own personal style?

When you next go shopping or want to get all dressed up ask your self… “What does my image and style say about me as a unique individual? How does what I wear make me feel? How does this garment work for my body shape and my lifestyle?’

A lot of young woman get this wrong. Just because something is ‘in fashion’ or someone else is wearing something and it looks fabulous, doesn’t mean it’s going to work for you in exactly the same way… If you love a look, play, experiment and find a way it will work for you as a unique individual and what works for your body shape and lifestyle.

On the other hand if you absolutely love something and you feel you just won’t be able to pull it off, don’t under estimate yourself! Challenge yourself to find ways to blend the trend or garment up to suit you… be brave and daring you will probably surprise yourself.
