Jungle Fever, Anchors Away, Festive Nostalgia! Fragrance Trends for Spring

Ever wondered how fragrances are made?

Well last week, I was lucky enough to get a little crash course in fine fragrances, thanks to Satiskin at the MANE headquarters in Jozi.

We learned all about how fragrances are developed, from raw materials to the fabulous end product we get to enjoy. We also got to sniff and chat about some of the natural, as well as synthetic raw materials that are used to create different scents.

It was fascinating!

While I was there, I also got the inside scoop on the fragrance trends for our upcoming summer season!

There are three main emerging fragrance trends for Spring/ Summer 2013… Jungle Fever, Anchors Away and Festive Nostalgia.

Jungle Fever

This trend is all about the strong floral motif. Imagine superized flowers, mixed in with exotic tropical ingredients! It’s those warm notes that work so well to compliment the fruity flavours of the jungle.

  • Fruity Florals – Sweet mango and strawberry notes combined with vanilla and marshmallow
  • Floral Fruities – Go back to nature, with classic fruits like apples and pears worked in a healthy way
  • Chypre Family – Juicy lychee or tangerine combined with red fruit and wrapped around warm Chypre notes
  • Floriental Fruity – Fruits mixed with hibiscus, tuberose and violet amber to give a warm and sensual scent

Anchors Away

AHOY sailor! Strips are still in for summer, and I for one, love the nautical trend. I’m so glad that this year nauticual elements are making a comeback, and they are even present in fragrance!

Designers like Jean Paul Gaultier and Tommy Hilfiger have always been behind this trend, and prove that it is one that will keep coming back!

  • Floral Green – Fresh notes enhanced by fizzy citrus notes and the classics being spiced up with fresh pepper
  • Floral Woody – Woody notes combined with florals to keep it fresh and summery
  • Clean and Pure Scents

Festive Nostalgia

While the other side of the equator celebrates the festive season in winter, in Sunny South Africa, we get to experience the holiday’s in summer style! But, those warm and cozy scents that make us long for a white Christmas are still prominent. It’s food fragrances that trigger the memory; think cloves, cinnamon and all things Christmas!

  • Cupcake – spice with almond milk, cinnamon and vanilla
  • Evergreen  –  giving woodsy evergreens a cool, sense of freshly fallen snow
  • Christmas Cookie – It’s the scents of a baker; Butter, vanilla and sugar cookies

YUM, YUM and YUM! Which of the three emerging fragrance trends speak to you?

It’s ahhh-maaay-zing! I kid you not, it smells like a warm oven that’s just baked a ton of cinnamon and spice cookies!

I’ll remind you guys about it again closer to the time, but it should be in stores in November 2013 – just in time for the holidays!
