When you can’t be in New York, bring New York to you!
I’ve been craving bagels for ages! I think it started somewhere between Instagram feeds and Hart of Dixie re-runs!
I found the most amazing, authentic East Coast Bagel recipe and I’m happy to report that my bagel craving has finally been satisfied!
These buggers bagels take a long time to prepare, but trust me when I say they are totally worth every mouth watering bite!
Serve them warm; with cream cream cheese, home made marmalade and steaming hot tea.
Check out the recipe and instructions below, and my slightly adapted ingredients list that I’ve converted to metric for us local gals.
Oven Temperature: 230ºC
You will need:
To make the Biga
- 550 grams bread flour (keep more aside and add if you notice that the mixture is too runny)
- 1/4 teaspoon instant packet yeast
- 350ml warm water
- 2 teaspoons honey
Final dough
- 100 grams bread flour
- 2 Tablespoons warm water
- 2 1/4 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon honey
Topping
- sesame seeds
Try it out and let me know how yours came out

Man, I thought you were going to say you found authentic bagels in Joburg! Homemade bagels are delicious, but very time consuming. Woolworths’ bagel will do if need be, as well as the Deeghuys, http://deeghuys.co.za/. Check them out if you haven’t yet. They rise overnight and cook for roughly 15 minutes.
Haha, sorry Blair 🙂
I wish! I actually haven’t ever found bagels, anywhere – accept at Mugg and Bean as part of their menu. Thanks for the info on Deeghuys, will defs check it out x
Wow, Dimi! You bake as well. These look scrumptious!!!
